A Passionate Desire For Truth About Israel

The author of this book writes a weekly publication, Brith Shalom Media Watch, which provides a spirited commentary about various issues related to the State of Israel. In this weekly publication, the author in a spirited and often good-humored way takes to task various news articles and articles of opinion about the State of Israel, and attempts to bring the reader’s understanding closer to the (pro-Israel) reality. He is concerned (and has heightened my concern over the years) about the many mistakes and misrepresentations regarding Israel’s wonderful existence as a restored nation-state. American Jewry which should have full-throated support for Israel nevertheless is called out by Verlin for articles written that distort or undermine the claims of Israel against its Arab enemies. This book is a compilation of articles from those 25 years of weekly articles that he has sent to subscribers. His determination is to justify and undergird the rationale and justification for Israel’s existence and policies — especially those policies that so offend the Arab world. We know and Verlin knows that the claims of Israel to the land of Judea and Samaria are eternal claims, but his weekly articles — and this book — strive continually to put Israel’s policies and actions into a legitimate historical context although this reviewer believes that Biblical dictates by Almighty God are also crucial, even decisive. I highly recommend this book for all those who want to learn how to be discriminating readers of articles about Israel…those who know that words matter. Verlin helps us go deeper than the Jewish or mainstream press in understanding just how true and powerful Israel’s claims about its existence and place in the Middle East are justified.

For years Mr. Verllin has been calling out in his weekly emails the disgusting anti-Israel bias in the media and revealing the truth. His brilliant commentary is gathered in his wonderful new book Here & Now. It is a must read.

In life as in football, the best offense is a great defense and also the best defense is a great defense. During this time of increasing anti-Jewish, anti-Christian, anti-American violence responses at many levels are needed. Community self-defense, both physical and verbal requires training and practice. Knowing the truth is insufficient. Jerry Verlin’s book, Here and Now: U.S. Jews and the Issues Confronting Us, provides a ready source of historical background in an easily retrieved format. It will hopefully serve as a counter to the lies and distortions all too often being passed as newsworthy.

This collection of trenchant articles gives the reader a real explanation of the ideas and events leading to the independence of the modern State of Israel in 1948. It covers all the bases supporting Israel, educating the reader about the who, when, and why of Israel and why it’s so important for American Jews and gentile friends of Israel.

If you know a lot about Israel, you’ll learn even more from this collection. If you aren’t too familiar with the past and present history of Israel and want to know more (in an entertaining format), check out Jerry Verlin’s book, a product of his decades of study on the subject.

Best to have at least fair knowledge of history to appreciate the book but it is a fantastic testament of one man’s work over many years making the case for support of Israel. Likely 5 stars for those already with fair to good knowledge of the history

There are so few places to rely on for facts, reason, and truth about Israel. Israel is the country that is surrounded by military enemies in the Mideast and by propaganda minded enemies around the globe. Thank goodness for Mr. Verlin and his book Here & Now. In a mere 200+ pages, he covers a tremendous amount of history, politics, and effects of propaganda focused on that little state we know as Israel. Verlin has done much to rally opinion around the flag of truth and common sense.
